Mount Rushmore is the National Memorial that depicts the
faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt
and Abraham Lincoln. Sculptop Gutzon Borglum (1867-1941), along
with 400 other workers, carved the famous 60-foot faces out of
the granite mountain near Keystone, South Dakota, from 1927 to
1941. Borglum's son, Lincoln, continued the project after his
father's death.
This famous memorial attracts approximately two million
visitors each year. Given that this durable granite only erodes
one inch every 10, 000 years, it will be around for many
generations to come.
