Christ Church was founded in Philadelphia in 1695 by members of
the Church of England.
The first church they built was a small wooden structure
that the congregation outgrew in about 20 years.
The church that stands today was constructed between 1727
and 1744. This
18th-century church, an example of Georgian architecture, is a
monument to colonial craftsmanship.
Seven patriots who signed The Declaration of Independence are buried at
Christ Church. Christ Church is the
first Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America.
This historic site is a National Historic Landmark and an Episcopal
parish.
