"The Entertainment Capital of the World"
"Sin City" Las Vegas, Spanish for 'the meadows', became a city in
1911 after first being established in 1905 as a railroad town. After the
legalization of gambling in 1931 and completion of Hoover Dam in 1936, Bugsy
Siegel opened the Flamingo Hotel on what is now called the Las Vegas Strip
in 1946.
The 'megaresort' casino explosion began after The Mirage opened in 1989 and
it has been followed by one spectacular structure after another, each with
its own theme and its own light display. Known for its gaming industry as
well as its entertainment and shopping, Las Vegas is the most populous city
in the state of Nevada and lures visitors from all over the world all hoping
to have a little luck.
