On Memorial Day, May 30, 1922, the Lincoln Memorial was
dedicated 57 years after Lincoln's death. In attendance were
hundreds of Civil War veterans, Lincoln's son, Robert Todd
Lincoln, President Warren Harding and former President William
Howard Taft. Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States,
was also known as the Great Emancipator. Behind the 19-foot
tall marble statue of Lincoln created by Daniel Chester French,
it says, "In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for
whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is
enshrined forever."
On the wall on the northern chamber is Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address
topped by a mural by Jules Guerin called "Reunion" and on the southern
chamber is the Gettysburg Address topped by a mural called "Emancipation".
The Greek-style temple has 36 columns that symbolize the states in the Union
at the time Lincoln died. The Lincoln Memorial attracts those who seek hope
and inspiration and is a long-lasting symbol of freedom to all who visit.
This ornament is a wonderful keepsake to remember your visit
to the Lincoln Memorial and Washington DC - and a great gift for
every patriot and history buff.
