The USS New Jersey (BB62) was restored and opened in October
2001 as an educational museum and memorial to all the brave
sailors who served on her during her long career starting
December 7, 1942, on the Camden Waterfront in New Jersey. The
Battleship New Jersey, built at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard,
was launched just a year after the attack at Pearl Harbor. She
was decommissioned for the last time on February 8, 1991, and
stricken from the mobilization asset list on January 4, 1999.
The USS New Jersey is the most decorated and surviving
battleship in America's history. Of the nineteen Battle and
Campaign Stars the New Jersey received, nine Battle Stars were
for WWII, four for the Korean conflict, two for Vietnam, and
three Campaign Stars were for service off Beirut and in the
Persian Gulf before Operation Desert Storm. The USS New Jersey
also earned the Navy Unit Commendation for Vietnam service.
This ornament is a wonderful keepsake to remember your visit
to this historic ship and unique museum - and a great gift for
every veteran and history buff.
