These men became our first firemen The Maltese Cross, a
symbol of protection and a badge of honor, is the badge of
firemen. It's story goes back hundreds of years to a courageous
group of crusaders known as the Knights of St. John who lived in
the Mediterranean Sea on a little island named Malta. When
fighting the Saracens for the holy land, they came across a new
and deadly weapon. The Saracen's hurled glass bombs saturated
with a highly flammable liquid at the crusaders which was then
followed by flaming torches which caused hundreds of knights to
be burned alive.
Other crusaders risked their lives to save their fellow crusaders from
dying a painful and fiery death. and were awarded a badge of honor which is
similar to the one firemen wear today. The firefighter who wears this cross
is willing to lay down his life for fellow citizens just as the crusaders
did so many years ago. The crusaders were the first of many courageous
firefighters in history and those today.
