The Cape
Hatteras Lighthouse is the nation's tallest and is a famous
symbol of North Carolina with its distinctive black and white
spiral candy-cane striping, earning it the nickname "The Big
Barber Pole". It is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The second and current conical structure was built in
1870 just 200 feet from the shore and today towers 208 feet high
(10 feet is below ground level).
The
present-day light is a rotating beacon which can be seen 20 miles out to
sea. From a distance the light
appears as a short flash at intervals of 7.5 seconds warning modern-day
sailors of the shallow sandbars below the water's surface, commonly know as
the "Graveyard of the Atlantic".
