Adopted as the official seal for West Virginia University on
June 16, 1869, by the WVU Board of Regents, the seal includes
the outline of the campus at that time (Woodburn Circle) with
"stability" symbolized by the hills behind the buildings and
"prosperity" symbolized by the rising sun. WVU's first
president, Reverend Alexander Martin, designed the seal and
incorporated the Greek motto translated as "Add to your faith
virtue and to virtue knowledge" on the inner circle and in Latin
"Seal of West Virginia University Established 7 February 1867"
on the outer circle.
This WVU Seal Ornament is an ideal keepsake gift for students,
graduates, faculty, and alumni of West Virginia University.
