Wolves were at one time very abundant in North America and
throughout the world. The decreasing size of their habitat and
widespread hunting have lessened their numbers.
Wolves live in packs with the leader normally being the
strongest male and they often mate for life. When pups are born
all the wolves in the pack assist in raising them. The packs
hunt at night in search of deer, elk, caribou and other large
hoofed animals. Their main weapon is their teeth. Wolves that
reach adulthood in the wild generally live 6 to 8 years where in
captivity they can live twice as long. Wolves communicate with
each other with visual expressions. They also communicate by
howling. Howling enables pack members to communicate over long
distances or through thick forest areas.
