Flamingos live in groups called colonies that can number up
to tens of thousands of flamingos in parts of Africa, South
Europe, SW Asia, NW India, South America, Peru, Chile, Bolivia,
Argentina, Caribbean and the Galapagos Islands. When flamingos
breed with another from their colony, the pair build a nest in
the shape of a volcano made of mud, stones and feathers and they
typically lay one large, white egg.
Flamingos get their pink/reddish feather color from their diet which is
high in alpha and beta-carotene. While living in lagoons, swamps or lakes
where the bottom is muddy, flamingos use their long legs and slightly webbed
feet to stamp on the muddy bottom to mix the water and food particles
together. They use their beaks to filter the food particles (usually
shrimp or blue-green algae) out from the water. The destruction or changing
of their habitat is their biggest threat.
Buy this keepsake ornament for a unique gift for any flamingo
collector.
