The giraffe is the tallest mammal on earth and can reach a
height of 19 feet. The giraffe uses its height to its advantage
as well as its excellent vision scanning the grasslands where
they live looking for predators such as lions, hyenas and wild
dogs. After a pregnancy lasting 15 months the newborn giraffe
is born weighing as much as 150 pounds and standing 6 feet
tall. The calves are always in danger of falling prey to the
predators.
The giraffe usually sleeps standing up so that they can quickly escape a
predator if needed. For those giraffes who do live to adulthood, they can
expect a lifespan of about 25 years in the wild.
