Cougars have a small head, short round face, long neck and
tail, erect ears and a long body and are generally the size of
an adult human. Known for its agility and ability to jump, they
can jump up to 18 feet from the ground into a tree, or jump
20-40 feet horizontally and run as fast as 35 mph. While
cougars are good swimmers they try to avoid the water. The
solitary cougar, native to the Americas, will live in any area
with adequate places to hide and prey to eat. They stalk and
ambush their prey, most often deer, but will eat most anything
including small insects and rodents.
Cougars live in the wild 8-10 years and in captivity, over 20 years.
Female cougars typically reproduce every other year giving birth to litters
of 1-6 kittens. The mothers will protect their kittens and will fight off
animals larger than themselves. Humans are the greatest threat to cougars
as they have no predators in the wild.
