The panda is native to the mountainous regions in
southwestern and central-western China. Pandas have a unique
look with a short tail, large black patches on its body, around
the eyes and over the ears and has a paw with five fingers and a
thumb which helps it hold the bamboo stalk. They survive mainly
on a diet of bamboo. The female panda gives birth to one or two
helpless cubs. Since the cubs need the mother's undivided
attention she is only able to care for one at a time resulting
in one dying soon after birth when two are born.
The cubs live with their mother for two years. Male pandas can weigh up
to 253 lbs. and females 220 lbs. While endangered, it is reported that the
number of wild pandas are on the rise mainly due to improved conservation
methods, laws protecting them and the establishment of panda reserves in
China. The panda is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
