Named after Olive Oatman, an Illinois girl who was kidnapped
by the Apache Indians, and located along the historic Route 66,
Oatman began over 100 years ago as a center for gold mining.
The population growth stopped in the 1920s when the largest
mining company left town. Clark Gable and Carol Lombard
honeymooned in the Oatman Hotel in 1939 and various movies were
shot in this town. Gable would often return to play poker with
the miners.
Oatman is like the Old West of a bygone era with wooden sidewalks running
the length of the town and with shops selling handmade items. Gunfights,
staged of course, and burros roaming the streets make it a unique and fun
destination.
