This carrier gets its name from our first President, George
Washington, who used the words “The Spirit of Freedom” when he
was describing the mood of the people in a letter to a fellow
patriot during the American Revolution.
The USS George Washington, a nuclear-powered aircraft
supercarrier, was given the official seal of approval by First
Lady Barbara Bush on July 4, 1992, in Norfolk, Virginia. The
homeport for the USS George Washington is Yokosuka Naval Base in
Yokosuka, Japan. The flight deck alone is 4.5 acres with room
for over 80 aircraft and this carrier can accommodate a crew of
6,250. The two nuclear reactors on board permit the ship to go
almost 18 years before needing to refuel and it can go as fast
as 30+ knots.
The ship has been recognized with many awards in its short life
and more are sure to come.
