USS Ronald Reagan is a 9th NIMITZ-class nuclear-powered aircraft
carrier which was christened by Mrs. Nancy Reagan on May 5, 2003, and
commissioned July 12, 2003. The USS Ronald Reagan is named after the 40th
President of the United States and while not deployed is in its home base of
San Diego, California.
The carrier is 1,092 feet long and stands 20 stories above the waterline.
The flight deck surface is 4.5 acres in size and is home to over 80 combat
aircraft and about 6,000 Navy personnel when at sea.
The USS Ronald Reagan
carries enough food and supplies to keep the entire crew fed for 90 days at
a time. The aircraft carrier is powered by two nuclear reactors which can
operate for more than 20 years before needing to refuel and which enable it
to achieve top speeds in excess of 30 knots.
