The Battle of Gettysburg, fought July 1 to July 3, 1863, in
Gettysburg, PA, was the turning point of the Civil War between
the Union and Confederate soldiers and was the battle with the
largest number of casualties (46,000 to 51,000). This battle
ended Confederate General Robert E. Lee's invasion of the North
and resulted in a victory for Union Major General George G.
Meade's troops. Lee quickly led his army in retreat back to
Virginia.
On November 19, 1863, President Lincoln delivered his famous "Gettysburg
Address" to honor the fallen soldiers at the dedication of the Gettysburg
National Cemetery. He stated "that these dead shall not have died in vain -
that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom." Today the
Gettysburg National Cemetery and the Gettysburg National Military Park are
two of the most revered historical landmarks in the nation.
A wonderful keepsake to remember your trip to this historic
site and a great gift for every Civil War buff.
