Located in Rochester, New York, the 40-foot high sandstone
octagonal Charlotte Genesee lighthouse was built in 1822 and was
used until 1881. When the piers were constructed, starting in
1829, the mouth of the port changed dramatically making a new
location necessary. A new lighthouse was built on the west pier
in 1884 and the lens was moved to the new location. The windows
in the old lighthouse were eventually sealed with concrete slabs
and in 1965 the U.S. Coast Guard considered tearing it down.
When the local high school students rallied to save the Charlotte Genesee
lighthouse, it was named a City of Rochester Landmark in 1974 and was placed
on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The lighthouse
functions as a museum today and is the second oldest lighthouse on the Great
Lakes.
