Built along
the North Carolina Outer Banks in December 1875, the 158-foot
tall conical tower was left unpainted to make it distinguishable
from the neighboring lighthouses.
The keepers of the lighthouse were removed in 1939 when
they were no longer needed to climb the 214 steps to trim the
wicks, clean the lenses and wind the clockwork mechanism which
rotated the beacon.
The
Carrituck Beach Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic
Places. This lighthouse is still
operational and the 1000-watt light displays a 20-second flash cycle, on for
3 seconds and off for 17 seconds, warning ships as far away as 19 miles out
to sea.
